Xiahou Dun mulliganed twice and kept a functional six built around three mana sources, Phyrexian Altar, Plaguecrafter, and Damnation. It developed Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Deserted Temple, Rings of Brighthearth, and Phyrexian Altar, but never established Xiahou Dun or an active recursion loop. Game Context

Xiahou Dun was neither mana-starved nor flooded. It reached five lands and assembled several pieces of its mana and sacrifice infrastructure, but never cast its commander or converted Damnation and Plaguecrafter in the graveyard into recursion value. Its control spells meaningfully slowed Grimgrin, but they did not dismantle the later artifact-based engine.

ChatGPT did not recognize the developing combo when Grimgrin cast Demonic Tutor and Nim Deathmantle. It focused on Gate to Phyrexia as a future answer and identified the deterministic loop only once Geralf’s Messenger began cycling through Ashnod’s Altar. A later retrospective claim that casting Gate on Turn 6 would have allowed Graveborn Muse to be sacrificed on the following upkeep was not supported by the recorded mana and sequencing: Graveborn Muse was cast instead of Gate, and the transcript does not establish that both could have entered that turn.

No graveyard hate appeared. Xiahou Dun interacted through Damnation and Plaguecrafter, but Geralf’s Messenger’s undying ability and Nim Deathmantle turned repeated deaths into the winning resource engine. Grimgrin, Corpse-Born itself was never required.
