Game Summary

Shelob developed toward its intended deathtouch-and-taxidermy game plan. Deadly Recluse provided an early Spider, while Nemesis Mask threatened forced blocks and future Food-copy value once Shelob, Child of Ungoliant was active. Night of the Sweets’ Revenge supplied the extra mana needed to cast Shelob on Turn 5 from five lands and a Food. Shelob was not mana-screwed; it established its commander and supporting pieces, but did so without leaving interaction available for Captain Sisay’s following turn.

Captain Sisay developed a legendary-toolbox engine backed by Lightning Greaves, Gaea’s Cradle, Cloud, Kamahl, Fist of Krosa, and, most importantly for this matchup, Aura Shards. Kamahl’s entry destroyed Nemesis Mask before Shelob could exploit it. On Turn 6, Magus of the Candelabra destroyed Night of the Sweets’ Revenge through another Aura Shards trigger, then Captain Sisay tutored Ashaya, Soul of the Wild. Ashaya’s entry destroyed Shadowspear, leaving Shelob’s artifact-and-enchantment support thoroughly dismantled.

Ashaya made Magus a Forest land in addition to its other types. After Lightning Greaves moved to Magus to give it haste, Gavvin spent two mana from Wasteland and Yavimaya Hollow to activate Magus for (X=2), untapping Magus itself and Gaea’s Cradle. Cradle could then tap for six green mana in the resulting board state. Repeating the Magus activation cost only two mana, so every cycle untapped Cradle and Magus while netting four green mana. That produced arbitrarily large green mana.

Magus could also untap Wooded Bastion, allowing the green mana to be converted into arbitrarily large white mana. Emiel the Blessed was already in hand, Kamahl was already on the battlefield, and Captain Sisay could be blinked, given haste with Lightning Greaves, and activated repeatedly to tutor the necessary legends. Kamahl could then use the unlimited green mana to give the team arbitrarily large power and trample. The final attack was not played out because Shelob had no available interaction and could not block lethal; the deterministic position was recorded as a Turn 6 combo win.

Game Context

Shelob was not constrained by missing land drops or an inability to cast its commander. It reached six effective mana on Turn 5 and established Shelob alongside Deadly Recluse. The problem was tempo and matchup pressure: Captain Sisay’s Aura Shards dismantled every noncreature support piece Shelob had deployed while simultaneously advancing Sisay’s board.

ChatGPT did not have mana open or an interaction in hand capable of stopping the Turn 6 loop. It recognized the infinite-mana interaction once Gavvin demonstrated Magus untapping itself and Gaea’s Cradle, but it had not disrupted the emerging toolbox engine beforehand. Shelob’s development was reasonable; it was simply outpaced by a fast, heavily overlapping Sisay engine.

The winning line was also an adaptation rather than Captain Sisay’s original plan. Gavvin had intended to use Emiel to blink Cloud, find Umbral Mantle, have Kamahl animate Gaea’s Cradle, and use the Mantle to generate infinite mana on a later turn. Drawing Magus on Turn 6 replaced that route with the cheaper Ashaya-Magus loop. The topdeck accelerated an already prepared combo position by approximately one turn rather than creating the win from nothing.
